INTRODUCTION

Vijayanagar Empire

The Vijayanagar Empire was a south Indian based Empire, which extended over the entire Deccan Region of Peninsular India. The History of this empire is perhaps the last chapter in the History of Magnificent India. The Glory and Richness of this Empire cannot be described by mere words of English Language. The empire is named after its capital city of Vijayanagaram, whose impressive ruins are found now in Hampi, now a World Heritage Site in modern Karnataka, India. The writings of medieval European travelers such as Domingo Paes, Fernao Nuniz and Niccolò Da Conti and the literature in local vernaculars provide crucial information about its history. Archaeological excavations at Vijayanagaram have revealed the empire's power and wealth. It is said that as vegetables and fruits are sold in heaps on the road-sides now, during those days there would be precious stones like Diamond, Vaidhooryam, Rubies, Sapphires, etc. sold on the roads. Such was the prosperity of the Empire.

The empire's legacy includes many monuments spread over South India, the best known being the group at Hampi. The previous temple building traditions in South India came together in the Vijayanagara Architecture style.
The empire's patronage enabled fine arts and literature to reach new heights in the languages of Telugu, Tamil, Kannadam and Sanskrit, while Carnatic music evolved into its current form. The Vijayanagara Empire created an epoch in South Indian history that transcended regionalism by promoting Hinduism as a unifying factor.
The Empire was founded by Harihara Rayalu I, with the help of the great sage Vidyaranya Swamulu. He ascended the throne, as the First ruler. After the fall of the Sultanate power in north India, which had its effect in South India also, Harihara Rayalu I waged war against kings ruling small kingdoms (who were once the Sub-ordinates of the Delhi Sultan, and Later revolted) and succesfully defeated them, thus expanding the territory of the Vijayanagar Empire.
